What is the Open Awards Level 3 Fibre Installation & Testing course?

Open Awards Level 3 Award in Fibre Installation and Testing is a Communications Networking course which provides an industry-recognised award, approved for the ECS Network Installer (Level 3) Card.

This course provides delegates with the opportunity to learn both theoretical and practical skills of fibre optic cabling. Learners will gain insight into the communications cabling industry and an understanding of the services offered as well as terminology, health & safety regulations, and the skills to install fibre optic cables. This course also includes content for the City & Guilds 3668-02 fibre installation award, allowing delegates to achieve this qualification alongside their Level 3 certificate.

Who should attend?

This course is recommended for those who have a basic understanding of fibre optic cabling; however, it is open to anyone aged 18+ at the time of registration. It is ideal for engineers who are looking to achieve a widely recognised certification and satisfy the requirements for the ECS Network Infrastructure Installer (Level 3) card.

What does the course cover?

The course aims to provide learners the knowledge and understanding of safe working practices, including basic principles required to work in the telecommunications industry. Learners will also develop knowledge and understanding of installation, splicing, termination and testing of fibre optic cable in patch panels/equipment racks. This would usually take place in an indoor/external environment involving multimode and single-mode end-to-end cabling

How do you complete the course?

This course consists of 4 weeks online learning followed by 3 days attendance at our facility.

Our online learning portal consists of pre-recorded theory lessons and assessment activities to help prepare students for the exams. These must be 90% completed prior to attendance for admission to our facility for the practical training and exams.

We advise a minimum of 20 hours are allocated for the online work though individual learning hours can vary.

Practical details:

Our Telecommunications Training Centre is based in Melksham in Wiltshire.

We can take on a maximum of 8 delegates on each course. This is so each student receives 1-1 time with the trainer and so there is enough equipment for each student to use individually. Our practical dates consist of hands-on workshops with each piece of equipment, including the latest industry product ranges from VIAVI and Sumitomo.

Please note, exams are closed book examinations and consist of an online multiple choice based exam on the City and Guilds computer-based system and a written exam from OpenAwards. Practical assessments are simulated exercises such as basic splicing, external and internal cable preparation and testing fibre optic cables. Results are given at the end of the examination.

Extended Support and Aftercare:

At Fibreplus Telecommunications College we pride ourselves on our extended support once our students have completed their course and are out working in the real world. Our Support Team and Trainers are always happy to speak over the phone and answer any questions if support is needed after the course has ended.

  • I really enjoyed the course even allowing for the fact everyone was concentrating rather a lot on the exams at the end. Please pass on my thanks to Pete and the Team for their time and in particular the preparation for the exams. I particularly enjoyed the external enclosure practical and the OTDR demonstration. Although I regularly working with fibre optics I picked up several bits of knowledge that will be very helpful in the future.
