Who should attend?

Our FOA CFOT course is suitable for those looking to work within the telecoms industry, as well as those already in the industry who are looking for an internationally recognised certification.

What are the course requirements?

Basic knowledge of fibre optics would be beneficial, however our FOA CFOT course is open to beginners within the Telecoms Industry.

What does the course cover?

Unit 1 covers Health and Safety, Identifying Safe Working Practices, Carrying Out Preparation, Basic Principles of SI Unit Symbols, Basic Principles of Communications Systems, Advantages & Disadvantages of Fibre vs Copper, and Basic Principles of Data Communication.

Unit 2 covers Working Safely with Optical Fibres in an Internal Environment, Recommended Installation Procedures, Preparation for Fibre Connectorisation and Splicing, Splicing Together Optical Fibre, Terminating Fibre Optic Cable by Fitting Connectors, Testing Fibre Optic Links, and a City and Guilds Multiple Choice Assessment.

Unit 3 covers Working Safely with Optical Fibres in an External Environment, Recommended Installation Procedures, Preparing Fibre Optic Cable for Fibre Splicing, Joining Fibre Optic Cables by Splicing, Terminating Fibre Optic Cables by Splicing and Testing Fibre Optic Links, and a City and Guilds Multiple Choice Assessment.

How do you complete the course?

Our FOA CFOT course consists of Virtual Learning on our Online Portal and then in-house practical and assessments at our training centre once your online learning is completed.

Our ‘Virtual Training’ consists of 4 weeks of online theory work on our online portal, which you complete at home. The learning consists of a video lesson and then multiple-choice question test, we also encourage our students to complete these tests and the mock exams more than once.

Once you have completed the 4 weeks learning we invite our students to our centre to complete their practical assessments and exam – these do need to be in-house meaning you would need to come to our centre in Melksham, Wiltshire.

Practical details:

Our Telecommunications Training Centre is based in Melksham, Wiltshire.

Our FOA CFOT course runs weekly, and we take on a maximum of 6 delegates on each course. This is so each student receives 1-1 time with the trainer and so there is enough equipment for each student to use individually. Our practical dates consist of hands-on workshops with each piece of equipment, including the latest industry product ranges from EXFO and Sumitomo.

For FOA CFOT you would need to come to our centre for 2.5 days.

Please note, exams are multiple choice, closed book examinations and results are given at the end of the examination.

When you come to us, we require you to bring your ID for registration. Other than this, we provide you with everything you need.

Extended Support and Aftercare

At Fibreplus Telecommunications College we pride ourselves on our extended support once our students have completed their courses and are out working in the real world. We achieve this as our students have access to their online theory content and workshops after they have completed their course meaning they can revise their knowledge if needed at a later date. Our Support Team and Trainers are always happy to speak over the phone and answer any questions if any support is needed in the future after the course has been completed.

  • Having reached out to multiple training centres in order to get my level 1 & 2 for the C&G 3668 - 02 in Fibre Optics, I eventually settled with Fibreplus in Melksham which is a 3 hr drive for me. The reason for my choice was simply the assistance, professionalism of the staff with my enquiry & questions especially Stef who is brilliant with her knowledge & communication, if she didnt have the answer she got it & called me back. The support that I got when doing the self study was 2nd to none (so many emails LOL) . Then came the in house training & exam prep then exams. Here Peter was brilliant taking time to explain thoroughly and assist in the practical sessions splicing, testing, & walking through each process. Happy to say I passed the exams. Now looking to do the Advanced OTDR testing soon. I cant reccomend Fibreplus enough for your training needs. Reach out to Stef with your questions.

  • “I can honestly say one of the best courses I have been on. Course content very good. Staff very helpful and knowledgeable. I will be returning to study further courses with fibre plus. Shout out to 'Jamie' whom I thought was most helpful thought out my time at fibre plus.

  • I came to Fibreplus for a FOA Technician course, expecting to gain practical knowledge in working with optical fibers and pass the international FOA certification. To be honest, the training I underwent at Fibreplus exceeded all my expectations. The instructor Pete, a kind and professional person, guided the group in an excellent manner, answered questions and helped at every stage of the preparation for the tests and the practical work at the laboratory stations. The equipment we worked with was of the highest level and perfectly maintained. The preparation for the test was excellent and the printed study material we received helped us prepare properly. Thank you to the team, to the kind Stefanie who guided the training process until we arrived at the facility in a friendly and patient manner, and to Pete the excellent instructor.

  • I really enjoyed the course even allowing for the fact everyone was concentrating rather a lot on the exams at the end. Please pass on my thanks to Pete and the Team for their time and in particular the preparation for the exams. I particularly enjoyed the external enclosure practical and the OTDR demonstration. Although I regularly working with fibre optics I picked up several bits of knowledge that will be very helpful in the future.
